English Education for future India

English to weaker sections of Indian society

India is fast moving ahead as one of the technologically most advanced countries in the world. But, the tragedy of India is that the present generation is suffering from "mal-education". It is because the people and those in power ignored the educational department as one of the unproductive departments. Education is one of the social overhead capitals which lay the foundation of the future of any country. If education gets corrupted, the result cannot be seen immediately but after twenty years. The present dirt in education is going to choke the future generation. Some people think that denying education to the masses helps them retain power and position forever. But, history of man has proven that such a situation cripples the whole country. So, the urgent need is to cleanse all the dirt out of the department.

If the present education should cater to the future generation, it should concentrate on English education. Because the future world belongs to those who master English language. Presently, more than half of the educated in India are weak in using English. If India has to shoot itself into the forefront, the weaker sections have to get English education. Because the previleged sections of the society, with their allegiance to non-English languages like Hindi and Sanskrit, have their own in-built limitations. So, all sections should get access to English so that we can choose the worthy from among them.

Proper policy framing and implementation are needed. To begin with all headmasters who cannot teach English to 10th standard in Indian schools should be removed. Periodic efficiency/eligibility tests should be conducted to the existing English teachers. New English teachers with mastery in both classical methods of teaching and play way or activity based methods should be recruited. All good English teachers should be encouraged by providing sufficient salary, sufficient vacation to self study and periodic in-service training for professional growth.

Formal grammar should be taught at post primary classes (above 6th standards) upto graduation level. Communicative approach is acceptable at the lower level but not at pre-graduation or graduation level. Spoken English alone cannot make scholars. The students should be capable of reading and comprehending English classic literature. They should be familiar with the works of Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelly, Bernard Shaw, Jane Austen and Oliver Goldsmith  etc.
